Which FINRA exam should I take first?

For most people, the SIE — Securities Industry Essentials — is the right first exam. It requires no firm sponsorship, so you can pass it before you have a job at a financial firm. Do I need the SIE before the Series 7?

Yes — the SIE is a required co-requisite for the Series 7. You cannot receive your General Securities Representative registration without passing both. Technically you can take them in either order, but pass the SIE first: it requires no firm sponsorship, its content is foundational for the Series 7, and your pass is valid for 4 years.

Which exam is best for investment advisors?

For fee-based investment advisors at RIAs charging AUM or flat fees: the Series 65. No prerequisites, no sponsorship required, standalone license. For full-service advisors wanting both commission and fee-based capability: Series 7 + Series 66 is the most efficient path. Series 66 combines Series 63 and Series 65 content for Series 7 holders into one exam.

What is the difference between the Series 65 and Series 66?

Both qualify you as an Investment Adviser Representative. The Series 65 is standalone — no prerequisites, no sponsorship, anyone can take it. The Series 66 combines Series 63 and Series 65 content for Series 7 holders in one exam, giving you both state agent registration and IAR status. The Series 66 has a higher pass threshold (73%) than the Series 65 (72%) or Series 63 (72%) separately. If you have Series 7, take Series 66. If not, take Series 65.

Can I take FINRA exams without being sponsored by a firm?
