Which FINRA exam should I take first?

For most people, the SIE — Securities Industry Essentials — is the right first exam. It requires no firm sponsorship, so you can pass it before you have a job at a financial firm. It is also the required co-requisite for the Series 7, Series 6, and most other FINRA top-off exams. Exception: if you want fee-based investment advice at an RIA without a broker-dealer, take the Series 65 instead — no prerequisites, no sponsorship required.

What is the hardest FINRA exam?

The Series 7 is the most difficult representative-level FINRA exam. It is 125 questions, 3 hours 45 minutes, 72% to pass, with a first-time pass rate of approximately 65%. Options strategies (15% of the exam) is the most commonly failed section. Among NASAA exams, the Series 65 and Series 66 have the most serious failure consequence: a third failed attempt triggers a mandatory 6-month waiting period.

Is the Series 63 harder than the Series 65?

No. The Series 65 is significantly harder. The Series 63 is 60 scored questions, 75 minutes, focused on state securities agent law — most candidates need 2–4 weeks. The Series 65 is 130 questions (all scored), 3 hours 30 minutes, covers economics, quantitative methods, investment vehicle characteristics, fiduciary duty, and investment adviser law — most candidates need 6–8 weeks. A third failed Series 65 attempt triggers a 6-month waiting period; the Series 63 does not have this.

Do I need the SIE before the Series 7?

Yes — the SIE is a required co-requisite for the Series 7. You cannot receive your General Securities Representative registration without passing both. Technically you can take them in either order, but pass the SIE first: it requires no firm sponsorship, its content is foundational for the Series 7, and your pass is valid for 4 years.

Which exam is best for investment advisors?

For fee-based investment advisors at RIAs charging AUM or flat fees: the Series 65. No prerequisites, no sponsorship required, standalone license. For full-service advisors wanting both commission and fee-based capability: Series 7 + Series 66 is the most efficient path. Series 66 combines Series 63 and Series 65 content for Series 7 holders into one exam.

What is the difference between the Series 65 and Series 66?

Both qualify you as an Investment Adviser Representative. The Series 65 is standalone — no prerequisites, no sponsorship, anyone can take it. The Series 66 combines Series 63 and Series 65 content for Series 7 holders in one exam, giving you both state agent registration and IAR status. The Series 66 has a higher pass threshold (73%) than the Series 65 (72%) or Series 63 (72%) separately. If you have Series 7, take Series 66. If not, take Series 65.

Can I take FINRA exams without being sponsored by a firm?

It depends on the exam. No sponsorship required: SIE (register at finra.org), Series 63 (register with your state), Series 65 (register with your state). Firm sponsorship required via Form U4: Series 6, Series 7, Series 66, Series 24, and most specialist exams (Series 57, 79, 82).

What is the Series 7 pass rate?

FINRA does not publish official pass rates. Based on industry data, the consensus estimate for first-time Series 7 takers is approximately 65% — roughly 35% fail on their first attempt. The most common failure causes: underestimating options (15% of the exam), completing fewer than 1,500 practice questions, and booking the exam before a scored readiness benchmark confirms readiness.

What is the SIE exam?

The SIE — Securities Industry Essentials — is FINRA's foundational securities exam. It covers capital markets, securities products and risks, customer accounts, and the regulatory framework. It is 75 questions, 1 hour 45 minutes, 70% to pass. No firm sponsorship required — anyone 18 or older can take it. Your pass is valid for 4 years. It is the required co-requisite for the Series 7, Series 6, and most FINRA top-off exams.

How do I choose between the Series 6 and Series 7?

Choose Series 6 if your role involves selling mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life, and 529 plans at a bank, insurance firm, or credit union — it is faster (50 questions, 4–6 weeks) and more focused. Choose Series 7 if your role requires selling individual stocks, bonds, options, or ETFs at a full-service broker-dealer. Both require firm sponsorship and the SIE co-requisite. Starting with Series 6 does not prevent you from adding Series 7 later.

How long does it take to become a licensed financial advisor?

Series 65 only (fee-based RIA): 6–8 weeks, no sponsorship needed. Series 7 path (broker-dealer representative): SIE 4–6 weeks before hire, Series 7 8–12 weeks after hire, Series 63 2–3 weeks — total 6–12 months. Full-service advisor (Series 7 + Series 66): 6–12 months. Timelines assume structured study with quality materials and a scored readiness benchmark before each real exam.
