SIE Exam

See if you're ready to pass

Answering questions on the SIE exam can be challenging. Test takers must be able to identify the key information and select the correct answer. The SIE exam is not a speeded test and is designed to provide enough time for students to answer every question. But, SIE exam candidates often find it difficult to answer complex questions efficiently. This can lead to a time crunch at the end of the exam.

75-Multiple choice questions must be completed in one hour and 45 minutes. Each SIE exam will contain experimental questions. These are not graded and do not count towards the passing score. Extra Time will be added to each candidate’s exam to allow for the experimental questions. A passing score of 70 % is required to pass the SIE exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SIE has 75 scored multiple-choice questions plus 10 unscored experimental questions, with a time limit of 1 hour 45 minutes. You need 70% to pass. The exam is one of the shortest FINRA qualification exams, but it covers foundational material that every subsequent representative-level exam builds on

No. The SIE is one of the few FINRA exams that doesn’t require sponsorship — anyone 18 or older can register and take it. Many candidates take the SIE before applying for industry jobs to strengthen their resume and shorten firm onboarding.

Yes. The SIE is a co-requisite for every representative-level qualification exam — you must pass both the SIE and your topoff exam (Series 6, 7, 22, or 79) to become registered. Most candidates take the SIE first since it covers foundational concepts the top-off exams assume.

The SIE covers knowledge of the securities industry, products and their risks, trading practices, customer accounts, and prohibited activities. It’s broad rather than deep — the depth comes from the top-off exam you take afterward. Our practice questions cover all four topic areas in the same weighting as the real exam.

Your SIE pass is valid for 4 years, giving you time to secure sponsorship and take your top-off exam. If you don’t complete a top-off exam within 4 years, you’ll need to retake the SIE to register.
