The Securities Industry Essentials — no firm, no sponsorship, no wait.
The SIE is FINRA's foundational exam. Anyone can take it — no broker-dealer, no employer, no finance background. Register at finra.org, pay the $80 fee, and study with our course for 4–6 weeks. Taking it before your separation date means you walk into every civilian interview with a verified credential already in hand. Your SIE pass is valid for 4 years.
Series 7, Series 65, or Series 6 — which one fits your target role?
Series 7: The general securities representative license — stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds, and more. The most common path for advisors at broker-dealers and wire houses. Requires firm sponsorship.
Series 65: The Investment Adviser Representative license for fee-based advisory. No firm sponsorship required. Best for veterans considering independent practices or RIAs.
Series 6: Variable products and mutual funds — the entry path at many banks and insurance firms.
Dozens of major firms actively recruit veterans. Your SIE gives you an edge.
Edward Jones, Northwestern Mutual, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and hundreds of independent broker-dealers and RIAs have dedicated veteran hiring programs. Some have SkillBridge partnerships that allow you to begin training before your separation date. Having the SIE already passed signals initiative and immediately distinguishes you from civilian candidates who haven't started.
Your firm sponsors you for Series 7 — typically 8–12 weeks of study.
Once hired, your firm submits a Form U4 to FINRA, opening your exam window for the relevant top-off exam. Most firms give you paid study time. The Series 7 is 125 questions, 3 hours 45 minutes, 72% to pass. Our complete course includes 3,000+ practice questions, a full video course, and the GreenLight readiness exam that tells you honestly when you're ready before you spend $245 on the real test.
Series 63 or Series 66 — 2–4 additional weeks, your firm guides this.
The Series 63 is required in most states for Series 7 holders. The Series 66 combines Series 63 + Series 65 for Series 7 holders who want both agent registration and IAR status — allowing both commission and fee income. Your firm's compliance team handles the state registration filing process. GreenLight Guarantee applies here too.
Fully licensed. Your military network is your first client base.
With SIE + Series 7 + Series 63 (or 66), you are a fully licensed registered representative. Most veterans who follow this path are fully licensed within 6–12 months of separating. Your first client advantage: fellow veterans trust other veterans with their money. Your service community is your built-in referral network.
The 5-step path from service to licensed financial advisor.
This path applies whether you are separating, recently transitioned, or already in a civilian role and looking to move into financial services. The order matters. Start with the SIE — it’s the only step you can complete before you need a firm.
Alternatives
You've already been doing the hardest parts of financial advising.
Financial advisory firms care about four things when they hire: trust, discipline, the ability to act in someone else's best interest, and the ability to explain complex things clearly under pressure. Your service record speaks to every one of them before you say a word.
Fiduciary duty
You were legally and morally accountable for the welfare of the people under your command — their safety, their readiness, their futures. You made decisions in their best interest, not your own convenience.
In financial advising: the fiduciary standard requires you to act in your client’s best interest, not your own. Registered Investment Adviser Representatives (IARs) are held to this standard by law. It is the foundation of the profession — and you’ve already lived it.
Mission-critical discipline
You executed complex plans under pressure, maintained daily accountability for people and equipment, and followed structured processes even when it would have been easier not to. Discipline wasn’t optional — it was the baseline.
In financial advising: new advisors who succeed in their first three years do so through consistent, disciplined prospecting — reaching out to clients day after day, following structured financial planning processes, and building relationships systematically. This is not a creative field. It’s a disciplined one. You have an advantage here that most civilian candidates don’t.
Financial accountability at scale
Military officers managed operating budgets in the millions. NCOs ran supply chains, payroll, and equipment accounts worth more than most people earn in a decade. Even junior enlisted personnel handled accountability for complex assets and resources.
In financial advising: you are explaining accounts, portfolios, asset allocation, and financial plans to clients. Your baseline comfort with financial scale and accountability is meaningfully higher than most career changers from non-financial backgrounds. You will not be intimidated by a client’s balance sheet.
Your 4-step path to licensing:
Step 1: Study for and pass the SIE (no firm required, 4–6 weeks)
Step 2: Use the SIE credential in your job search, it signals initiative and readiness
Step 3: Get sponsored by a broker-dealer or RIA for Series 7 (8–12 weeks)
Step 4: Add state registration (Series 63, 65, or 66 your firm guides this)

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. The SIE requires no firm sponsorship and no civilian employment status. You register directly through finra.org, pay the $80 exam fee, choose a Prometric testing center, and schedule your appointment. Your military status is completely irrelevant to your eligibility. Study for 4–6 weeks with our course and sit before your separation date. You walk into your first civilian interview with a verified, independently obtained credential that most candidates won’t have.
No. There is no degree requirement for any FINRA or NASAA licensing exam. The SIE, Series 7, Series 65, and all other exams are open to anyone who passes them. Your military service, leadership experience, and security clearance are what financial services firms look for in veteran candidates — not a finance degree. We have helped veterans from every branch, every MOS and rate, and every educational background pass these exams and build successful advisory careers.
GI Bill benefits primarily cover accredited degree programs and approved vocational training programs. Securities exam prep courses like our SIE and Series 7 packages may qualify under certain VA benefit categories — the answer depends on your specific benefit type (Post-9/11, Montgomery, VR&E, etc.) and your state’s VA approval status. We recommend contacting your VA education benefits advisor directly to confirm eligibility before purchasing. The good news: even without GI Bill coverage, our complete packages ($139–$329) are significantly lower cost than most vocational training programs — and the return on investment is immediate once you’re licensed and earning.
Several major firms actively recruit military veterans: Edward Jones has a dedicated Military Veteran Support Team and over 19,000 branch offices where veterans can run their own practice. Northwestern Mutual has a strong track record of veteran hiring with mentorship and hybrid compensation. Morgan Stanley has a dedicated Military and Veterans Network with paid training. Merrill Lynch‘s Financial Advisor Development Program includes full licensing support. Beyond the wire houses, thousands of independent broker-dealers and RIAs specifically recruit veterans for their culture fit and client trust advantages. Many also participate in the DOD SkillBridge program — worth researching before your separation date.
The Series 7 is FINRA’s General Securities Representative exam — the most common full-scope brokerage license. It consists of 125 questions across 10 topic areas, requires a 72% passing score in 3 hours 45 minutes, and requires firm sponsorship to sit. First-time pass rate is approximately 65% — roughly 1 in 3 candidates fails. The most commonly failed section is options strategies, which make up 15% of the exam. Veterans consistently perform well on the Series 7 because the exam rewards structured preparation and discipline — not innate finance knowledge. Study time with our complete course: 8–12 weeks at 1.5 hours/day.
Choose the Series 7 if you want to work at a broker-dealer (wire house, regional firm, bank BD affiliate) and earn commissions on securities transactions. Most major firms — Edward Jones, Northwestern Mutual, Merrill Lynch — use the Series 7 path. Requires firm sponsorship.
Choose the Series 65 if you want to give fee-based investment advice, charge asset management fees, or build an independent practice without relying on a broker-dealer. No firm sponsorship required — you can get this license on your own. Popular with veterans building their own advisory practices or joining RIAs.
Some veterans get both over time — Series 7 at a firm, then Series 66 (which combines state registration and the Series 65 equivalent) to add fee-based capability. Call 877-218-1776 and we’ll help you work out which path fits your specific goals.
Most veterans complete the full licensing process within 6–12 months of separating. The SIE takes 4–6 weeks to study for (take it before you separate). After hiring, most firms give you 60–90 days to pass your top-off exam (Series 7 or Series 6), which takes 8–12 weeks of study. Adding state registration (Series 63 or 66) adds 2–4 more weeks. If you take the SIE before your separation date, you can be fully licensed within your first 6 months at a firm. Veterans who follow a structured study plan — which is exactly what military training prepares you for — consistently land at the lower end of these timelines.
The GreenLight Guarantee is our money-back promise: complete our course, pass our GreenLight readiness exam at the required score threshold, sit the real FINRA or NASAA exam within 5 days of passing GreenLight, and if you don’t pass — we refund your course fee in full. The GreenLight exam is a full-length, real-difficulty simulation of the actual exam. In 30 years and 400,000+ students, no student who has passed the GreenLight exam has ever failed the actual exam. We make this offer because our data gives us the confidence to back it. You’ve operated under guarantees before — this one is real.
