The SIE proves your foundational knowledge and eligibility; the top-off exam grants the specific scope of license your role requires.

If you go a different direction after graduation, it simply doesn’t get used — there’s no registration to maintain, no continuing education required, and no cost to keeping it. If you come back to financial services within 4 years, it’s still valid. Once you are hired and your firm submits a Form U4 on your behalf through FINRA’s Central Registration Depository (CRD), your SIE pass gets linked to your registration.
